Take a good look friends, at who you were when you got called into this life. I don't see many of the "brightest and the best" among you, not many influential, not many from high-society families....Everything that we have - right thinking and right living, a clean slate and a fresh start - comes from God by way of Jesus Christ. That's why we have the saying, "If you're going to blow a horn, blow a trumpet for God. (Excerpts from 1 Cor. 1:29-31, The Message)

Providence Loud and Clear

by Tracey McMahan

I love to hike, and so last month I was excited to hear about an organized hike to Chimney Rock scheduled for today. I was one of the first people to sign up. I paid my $15 and happily accepted my official t-shirt and complimentary water bottle.

This morning I woke up early and filled my new hip pack with snacks, sunscreen and lip balm. I loaded the car and started it up. As I backed out of the garage, I noticed that my automatic windows weren’t working, and I didn’t have dash lights or headlights. These are not good signs. I drove to the end of the block, made a U-turn and headed back home fearing the worse – a bad alternator.

I remember briefly asking, "Lord, am I not supposed to go on this hike?", but I was determined. I parked the car in the garage, closed the automatic door and unloaded my gear. I ran upstairs and grabbed the keys to my other vehicle.

As I climbed into the other car, I pressed the garage door opener, and then turned the key in the ignition. Nothing. I pumped the gas pedal and cranked the engine. "It’s just cold," I mused, so I tried again. Still nothing. "Lord, what’s going on? Am I not supposed to go on this hike?" But I wasn’t ready to quit. So I waited and tried the car again. And waited and tried again. And again. Finally it started – success!

About this time I smelled exhaust and started to cough. I glanced behind me and discovered that the garage door had failed to open. "This can’t be good," I muttered. I climbed out and quickly opened the other garage door, coughing from all the fumes. At the same time I kept pressing the second garage door opener. The batteries were good, the motor was running, but the door would not engage. "This is ridiculous!" I thought. "Really, Lord? No hike?"

But I had yet another idea. I disconnected the garage door from the opener, and even though the door didn’t appear to be locked, it would not budge. So I finally admitted defeat and accepted the fact that I wasn’t going anywhere. And then I did what any sensible middle-aged woman would do. I sat down on the cold, hard floor and pouted. "Okay, Lord, I give up. I guess I’m not supposed to go on this hike."

By this time it was too late anyway. The hike was about to start and I was still 30 minutes away with a problem car, a broken garage door, a hacking cough, and a defeated spirit.

Has anything like this ever happened to you? You’ve got a plan in mind, something you desire to do, a task you hope to accomplish, and one thing after another seems to get in your way – deterring your best efforts and preventing you from accomplishing your goal. And you wonder, why. Why, through no fault of your own, is nothing working out? Why aren’t things turning out the way you planned? Why does God seem to be saying "No" at every turn?

Because I believe in the providence of God, I believe that everyday things happen with some purpose in mind. If I had set out to make that hike, maybe something dramatic would have happened, like a car accident on the way to the park. Maybe I’d have sprained my ankle on an uneven bend in the trail. Maybe my alternator would have gone out when I was miles away. Or maybe God just wanted me to stay home and write this story so that you would be assured you are not alone amidst the everyday trials and frustrations of life.

All I know for certain is that I was not supposed to go on that hike. And even though I’ll never know the reason why, God knows, and that’s good enough for me. I can rest in His providence. I can trust His plan. And so, my friend, can you.

Ms. Team (Memorizing Scripture):Sixth Post

Hey Ms. Team,

If it feels like it was just yesterday when we posted last it's because it really was just 6 yesterdays! Only our September posts will be close together like this. Come October we will be back on our normal schedule of 2nd and 4th Mondays.

If you don’t have your verse fully memorized yet go ahead and post what you are working on. Mine is simple and short this time...but something I need to be reminded of often.

Wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD. Psalms 27:14

Looking forward to seeing yours.....

He Gives and He Takes Away

I was no more than a dozen cars behind the collision. Two cars…four lanes…fatality to four lives. That quick, the breath of life was taken.

The baby came two weeks early. At barely five pounds and with growth having stopped, the C-section caused air to fill her lungs. That quick, the breath of life was granted.

So it was a little thing that ate at me…not really an argument, because you had to actually pass words back and forth to acquire that status. No, it was more that ugly head of offense again. I recognized it, but I didn’t want to deal with it. Acknowledge it, yes. Deal with it, no.

I was hurt beyond even my own belief. But the hurt gnawed at me and separated me from everything I believed in….God, hope, love, forgiveness, kindness, friendship. All of it had disappeared from me.

I was no more than a dozen cars behind the collision….
That could have been my life.

So I have been pondering differently today.

Jesus came to earth fully God, but fully man. Didn’t he love without love being returned?

He wept over a people that would not acknowledge him, and failed to understand him.

He died without the friendships he might have had, or the praise he was due.

He went unnoticed for the most part – except when he did something good, and right.

He considered others more than himself, and gave his life to prove it.

He is my breath of life.

He gives.

And He takes away.

He is praying for me, and for you…

And this I pray…that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment, that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ, being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God. Philippians 1:9-11

Ms. Team (Memorizing Scripture): Fifth Post

posted by Trudy

Hey Ms Team,

Due to the Simulcast, we are doing our September memory verse postings today and next Monday. I hate to put this up so soon after the previous post "Coffee Shop Talk" as it is such an inspiring post. I hope if you haven't had the chance to read it you will still check it out.

One of the points that Beth made during the Simulcast had to do with Scripture Memory. If you were there you might remember her sharing the picture about a woman bent over due to the burdens and guilt of sin.  Those who came into her life told her to "straighten up," but as much as she wanted to, she couldn’t. She just didn’t have it in her to do it on her own. She needed help.

Have you ever felt that way?  So gripped with a particular habitual sin that you find it impossible to escape on our own?  People in your life tell you to "get with it" and "straighten up" but you just can't seem to do it.  You need something, someone beyond yourself to help.

One of the great benefits of memorizing God’s Word is that in doing so we are inviting a powerful Helper to come into our lives and help us do the very things we cannot do on our own.  We exchange the "old" in our lives with the " new." As we input God’s Word into our hearts and minds it re-programs and replaces the harmful, manipulative, sinful thoughts that have entangled us and held us hostage for too long. God’s Word in our minds teaches us God’s way and unlocks the very chains we are incapable of loosening on our own. As we face the impossible and feel we are slowly slipping back into the familiar pit, He comes, often through a Word we have memorized, and shows us a different way. He gently straightens our back as only He can.

We need Jesus. We need the Word. It is impossible to be free without Him.

And I need you, to help me stay the course...I am grateful for the encouragement of having you to do this alongside with.

I wanted to share this comment left on the last Ms. Team Post as it encouraged me to keep going and I hope it does that for you too!

I hope you all keep memorizing and sharing. When I feel lost, coming to your "posting" always makes me feel uplifted and that I've had some "girl time".
Blessings,

Coffee Shop Talk

This is written by my friend, Tracey McMahan, who also wrote "Reflections on Ruth: Waiting"  (You can find that post by clicking on July under Blog Archive on the right hand side of this screen). The more I get to know Tracey, the more I love her. Enjoy this post! If you are like me it will resonate so deeply it will leave your spine tingling.

Today I met another woman at a coffee shop. We both had tea. Hers was cold. Mine was hot. She said, “No, thank you” to the yummy baked goods in the case. I had a big, fat oatmeal raisin cookie. She has four kids and is a stay-at-home mom. I’m an empty-nester and work outside the home. She is well established in her church and community. I’ve just moved to town. You might very well ask, “Do the two of you have anything in common? Besides tea, that is?” Oh, yes. Without a doubt. We are both in love. We are both gripped by the same passion. We both absolutely adore the exact same thing – the Word of God.

Our afternoon conversation sent me home thinking about my love for the ancient Book that had permeated our conversation. What is it about the Bible that rouses such passion in me? What is contained within its covers that keeps me coming back for more? What makes me so eager to turn its pages and pour over its contents? After all, that’s not what we do with most books, right? We read them once, maybe twice, if they’re really well written. And then we put them on the shelf. Or sell them at our next garage sale. Or donate them to the local library. But to keep reading the same book, day after day, year after year? Absurd! Unheard of! Ridiculous, some might say.

Unless that book is something more than simply ink on paper. Unless that book is truly unique and special. Unless that book contains truths so deep and honest and real and powerful that we almost can’t help but read it. And keep on reading it. It gets under our skin. It boggles our mind. It soothes our soul. And it changes our lives, if we let it.

What gives this book, a bestseller for decades, such power? What makes it so timeless? Simple. Two things: its Author and its Main Character. God and God. God the Father breathed it. God the Spirit inspired it. And God the Son fleshes it out, living and moving in every chapter and every verse. He draws us in. He lifts us up. He comforts and sustains. And yes, sometimes He convicts and chastens. But always He loves. He loves with a love so strong and overwhelming that it takes our breath away. And makes us want to know Him more. And makes us want to spend time reading about His amazing life, His amazing love, and His amazing return some day. And so we open up His book one more time. And read the old, old story once again. And meditate yet another day on the words that speak truth to our hearts and healing to our spirits.

The Bible.

One incredible read.

Simulcast Summary: Celebrating Christ!

I'm so glad many of you were able to come to the Simulcast.  For those of you who have asked how it went, I thought I'd take you on a photo journey of the day.  If pictures really do speak 1000 words I know you will be pleased I chose pictures instead words.  Right????  Here we go....

The tables are set, the doors are open and - praise God from whom all blessings flow -  the technical stream is working flawlessly.(see previous post to understand my deep gratitude for that)

Gayle and Metta taking tickets and handing out Listening Guides

Gina and Paula doing the same thing at a different entrance.

Paula Hennie, our prayer leader, leading the greeters and encouragers in a prayer time before it begins.  And by the way thank  you to these and many others for all your prayers before and during this day!
Greeters Jackie and Paula in action.

                                  Counting down to the start.

I have to share a funny story here.  Probably most of those in attendance never even knew this happened...so mostly just funny to me.  Right when the countdown went to 3 - 2- 1 - (blast off) we lost the feed. Yep...the screen just plain ole went blank.  My knees buckled and I looked over to Paula and said PRAY!. (She later told my husband she didn't even know what I was talking about) I was standing right behind Nathaniel, our tech guy,  who remained unreasonably calm and pointed out to me on the  tech computer screen that many other locations lost the feed too. That helped a little to know it wasn't a local problem. We both stood there in silence (well my outside was silent but my inside was not). The reason I think this is a funny story is because this is the area that most intimidated me and its as if someone knew that and decided to just mess with me a little bit for fun. Within about 10 seconds it was back up.  It paused once again (one last attempt to rattle me...as if the first time didn't succeed) and then it came back on screen and we never lost it again...Praise Him! So glad Jesus is Lord over technology!

                                     There's the cool cucumber.

Thanks for all you did Nathaniel and for braving a room full of women for the entire day. (Thanks also for giving up your hermeneutics room so we women could have access to 2 of them that day.  If you weren't at the simulcast, "hermeneutics" became a synonym for "restroom")

Let the Praise Begin

Travis and His team led us to the Throne many times that day.  What a priviledge it was to worship side by side with women representing more than 15 different churches and coming from all walks of life.  Thank you so much to all you ladies who willingly stepped out of the familiar to come join us for the day.  Such an extraordinary thing to be a part of the body of Christ!

And there is our well-loved Bible teacher, Mrs. Beth Moore.  The Lord brought it and she delivered it in her fun loving style.

And NOW for one of the definite highlights of the day.....LUNCH.  Really this picture should go closer to the top because the prep work for lunch started the day before.

These ladies cut and chopped and sliced and rolled and baked like nobody's business and they did it with such joy in their hearts that the kitchen became like a magnet (esp on Friday) drawing us all in to join the fun (and maybe sample a thing or two).

There's Karen using her hidden super speed talent to ice up 100 cupcakes per minute.  Can't even capture it on film without blurring it.

The lunch team quietly laid out the spread and then ran back to the kitchen before the lights came on and anyone could see who was responsible for this feast.
That's why I am posting it right here AGAIN...as big as I can blow the picture up - (no hiding this time girls!)  THAT is who is responsible for the yummy lunch we gobbled up.  Tammy, (who is in the middle and headed up the effort) Karen, Carissa, Nan and Melba, ya'll are AMAZING!  And even though we gladly give God all the credit for this great day and the work He did I am sure it is your waldorf chicken salad on a buttery croissant that got ladies in the right posture to make some significant decisions:).  Thank you for all your hard work!
Sorry there were not croissant sandwiches left to photograph but these subs were awesome too.
Enjoying lunch in the lovely outdoors.

Thank you to all those who shared a variety of ministries with us and how we could be involved, including Kairos Prison Ministry, Center for Women, The Haven, Moms in Community, BCC Pre-school ministry, One to One Discipleship and BCC ladies Bible Studies.
I love the idea that women who were not here and had nothing to do with this gathering will be blessed because we gathered in Christ's name and the aroma of His presence will burst out of these doors and surround many in the days to come due to some decisions made here.  Keep it going girls!

And there you have it!

As I work through the evaluations my heart is stirred by the peek of things unseen that the Lord did in women's lives this day. About a dozen women (that we know of) chose to recommit their lives to Him.  Around 20 made other significant decisions such as to walk more closely with Him and pursue Him more.  Still others laid their heart aches and issues at the altar and invited other sisters to pray with them for His way and will in their lives.  What an unspeakable priviledge to be a part of this and I know that is also the heart of all those who joined hands to help.

So finally, but in no way lastly, to the contrary, firstly, middle-ly lastly and all overly, we send out our deepest gratitude to our great God who came and spoke and comforted and encouraged and challenged and pursued us.
Thank you Lord Jesus.  You are life to us! (Deut. 30:20)

May your unfailing love rest upon us, O Lord, even as we put our hope in you. (Psm 33:22)

Needy Me Needs You Desperately.

posted by Trudy

Anxiety.

I hate it!  But boy has it had a grip on me lately. Even though the Word tells me to be anxious for nothing, sometimes I still am.

As we plan for the upcoming simulcast there are some factors we can control and then there are plenty that we have no control over.

The tech side of the simulcast is one of those quirky unknowns that intimidates me and causes some fear. It has nothing to do with the people running it but simply knowing I am at the mercy of whether or not the thing will actually work.

This year the simulcast will stream live into a record breaking number of churches (over 700) along with a few prisons and even some overseas locations. Wow! I can’t help but give Him some praise over that but as soon as my hands stop clapping I have a reoccurring nightmare that the stream is so overloaded it doesn’t work at our location and over 170 women who have paid their money and come to hear from God stare at me with angry eyebrows.  Daunting!

Recently the Lord has been speaking to me about this fear. The "be anxious for nothing" verse keeps appearing in the zaniest places reminding me I have only one alternative...to transmute the twisting grip of anxiety into prayer and lay my requests down to Him. To trust that He can do anything. ANYTHING. Including handling the tech side even if it had to stream to a million places at once. After all, He authored technology long before the word hit our lips and planned to use it greatly for His glory. Oh how fun to see that come to fruition.

So that’s what I’ve been doing. Every time I have felt the leaning of intimidation and anxiety over this event I have been asking, seeking, knocking, but I can be such a weakling at times and I could sure use your help. I know I have not stood alone in this place of prayer - a mighty team of princess warriors have been bending their knees, fasting some meals and trodding the battlefields in preparation for this event- its just that I thought if I let you know about it that you might be willing to join the fight too. (Not just for the tech side but for ALL sides).

I am more convinced than ever that our most strategic work surrounding this simulcast is prayer.

You see on Saturday a myriad of women and girls will come into our worship center from all walks of life and with them they will bring innumerable needs that only the Holy Spirit will be able to meet.

My heart beat is that not one person will leave that place with out a touch from God. I know that sounds big, but I believe the Lord is asking us not to just ask for the mediocre here, but to believe him for what is beyond us and our abilities. To believe Him for marvelous, unexpected, unbelievable things that can only be credited to Him.

There will be women coming in from broken homes, with broken hearts, and broken relationships. Why wouldn’t He want to bind them up?

There will be women who are just plain ole tired...weary from the race, who need a cold water break.

There will be prisoners attending, who have never been behind bars, but have been held captive to sexual addictions, eating disorders, a destructive thought life, pride, adulterous relationships (or perhaps even entertaining one). Why wouldn’t He want to set them free?

There will be those attending who are just in the dark and can’t seem to find their way out, who long to step into the light.

There will be those there who carry the grief of heartache and loss who He longs to comfort, and those who are deep in despair ready for it to be replaced with the oil of gladness.

One of my favorite memory verses reminds me that the Lord earnestly waits, looking and longing to be gracious to us. In fact, He lifts Himself up (I always see the cross in my head when I get to that part) so that He may have mercy on us and show loving kindness to us. (Is. 30:18)

The truth is I am expecting the Holy Spirit to come and show that mercy and lovingkindness He longs to show and to touch every single life in some way.  I know He will do that for everyone who will allow Him to. And though His working is not contingent on our prayers, the Word is clear that we should ask and trust Him for things exceedingly beyond what we can imagine.

So here’s my request.

Will you link arms with these other princess warriors (and maybe even a few princes) and fight this battle of prayer with us over the next few days right up to the end of Saturday? Even if you can’t be there your contribution to this most valuable work will not go unseen or unrewarded by the Lord.

I for one would be so encouraged to know you are standing with us in prayer.

Or kneeling....

Knowing you are beside me, I might even ask Him for the moon while I’m on my knees.

I know He could deliver!

And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us. Romans 5:5

If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you. This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.  John 15:7-8
If you would like to come to the Simulcast but money is an issue please see me as I have free/scholarship tickets available.

Beth Moore Simulcast is Almost Here - Sept 10th

posted by Trudy

We are preparing for you!

Meet the Simulcast Steering Team for the Brevard Community Church Host location.

I just met a cute lady from Hendersonville who came to the BCC office to buy some tickets.  She told me she reads this blog so I thought it might be fun to introduce the simulcast team to our home girls and our many visitors who we will be priviledged to host on Sept 10th.

To your far left is the darling food wonder-woman, Tammy Shook. Her energy is as boundless and bright as her smile and her love for the Lord shows up in the care of the food she prepares for many events. When you get your lunch on Saturday thank the Lord first and Tammy second as she and the food team she leads will have put many hours into making sure you have a nutritious and satisfying meal and they would rather be hung by their toes than be recognized for it.

Beside her is the amazing Paula Hennie. She is heading up the all important prayer effort. She keeps the prayer team updated on what specific things to pray for, and organizes prayer walks and prayer times that have no doubt fought many fights in the heavenlies in preparation for this event. If you are coming, than know you have been covered in prayer by Paula and her team.  A side effect to serving with Paula is laughter. There is a Beth Moore poster on the inside of every bathroom door at BCC and Paula exhorts us not to go in there without taking care of 2 things at once.

That’s me in the middle.

Then on my other side are the adorable blondies who are handling a myriad of things. Gina is organizing tickets and registration and Metta is our publicity girl, but you will no doubt see them wearing many hats on the day of the simulcast. The sweetness of their personalities and quiet willingness to do whatever needs to be done have been a great encouragement to me as we pull the final details together.

And there you have it...

We want you to know that we are buzzing with excitement as we do the final preparations to host you.

It’s not to late too get your ticket.

And please, if you cannot afford a ticket, contact me as I have scholarship tickets available that I would love to bless you with.

Hope to see you there!
